Assistance to Firefighters Grant
This grant program is America’s biggest fire grant program and provides thousands of grants each year. Applications typically open up in Q4 of each year, and awards go out starting in Q2.
Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation Grant
Each quarter, Firehouse Subs accepts a maximum of 600 grant applications into this program with a maximum of $45,000 being awarded per request each quarter. For 2025, the grant portal will open on the following dates at 10 AM EST:

USDA Fire Department Grants
These grants are given out to rural and volunteer fire departments. There are two grants from the USDA including one for forest service and one for rural development:
Federal Excess Personal Property Program & Firefighter Property Program
Community Facilities Loans and Grants Program
Lowe’s Grant for Fire Departments
Lowe’s Hometowns Program offers grants that can be used to renovate first responder facilities, including fire departments. In October 2023, the Wedington Fire Department received funding that allowed them to add new garage doors and more.
The Dickey Foundation Grants
The Dickey Foundation offers grants for first responders and takes applications on a quarterly basis. Grants tend to vary from $5,000 to $10,000 and priority is given to requests in proximity to Dickey's Barbecue Pit Restaurants.
Gary Sinise Foundation Grants
Grants from this program benefit firefighters, police, and EMTs. These grants are to cover equipment and training only, not building or operating costs.
Lt. Joseph P. Dibernardo Memorial Foundation Grants for Fire Departments
This program provides grants for departments in need of personal safety systems (PSS). When applying, fire departments are to include a brief essay describing the need for PSS.
Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grants
The SAFER grant aims to maintain the number of trained, “front line” firefighters in any given community. Fire departments can apply for this grant through the FEMA GO platform.
Firefighters Charitable Foundation Grants
The Firefighters Charitable Foundation offers a variety of grants for fire departments in need of funding which include:
Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
Fire Department Equipment Program
Community Smoke Detector Program
Juvenile Firesetter Prevention and Intervention Program
FM Fire Prevention Grant Program
Through this grant program, organizations working to combat fire can receive funding to support fire prevention, preparedness and control efforts, including pre-incident planning, fire prevention education/training and arson prevention/fire investigation.
Leary Firefighters Foundation Grants
Leary Firefighters Foundation (LFF) offers grants for training, equipment, and technology to US fire departments. LFF grants vary from $5,000 to $25,000 and those wishing to apply need to complete a Letter of Inquiry form.
FP&S (Fire Prevention and Safety) Grants
A subset of Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG), FP&S grants support the safety of the public and firefighters. To apply, fire departments can use the FEMA GO platform.
State Farm Safety Grants
Included under the State Farm Community Grants program, safety grants are awarded to help communities safe. Grants can be given in an effort to “shield homes from fires”.
Enbridge Safe Community First Responder Program
Started in 2002, this grant program offers funding across parts of the US and Canada. To be eligible a fire department must support a community within 10 miles of an Enbridge operation.
